Unacceptable Gift

One of those interesting issues that doesn’t seem to come up a lot is what do you do if you receive a gift that you wish that you hadn’t. The gift can either be one that is something you just can’t use, don’t appreciate, or if it is just unacceptable; not all gifts are appreciated in the light that they were given. Fortunately, there are some options.

You can donate the gift to a worthwhile charity. This is best for gifts that have some practical value, and can be used by anyone. Gifts of tools, clothes, and food are best for this option, and will usually be accepted; food may have some restrictions, but some church groups, especially those with food closets, will accept a wide variety of food. However, art gifts or gifts that were made especially for you cannot be dealt in this fashion.

You can give it to someone you know that would appreciate the gift. It’s not advisable that you do with too many of your gifts, as it just seems impolite. However, for some of your gifts, this is acceptable. In some ways, this is probably the best way to deal with gifts of art, especially if you someone appreciates the piece of art more than you do. At the same time, if you think that your gift will benefit some other person greater than you would, and there is an obvious need, this is usually actually seen in a good light.

Although it may be rather rude, you can throw the gift away. There’s just some gifts where this is unfortunately the best solution, especially if the gift is obviously unacceptable. It won’t happen often, but sometimes you just get a gift where there really is no other option. In some rare cases you may wish to give thee gifts to the authorities, but throwing it away is usually the best option.

Options to avoid are selling those gifts, especially on internet auction blocks. It stretches the limits of what is acceptable for gift-giving, and can cause some issues top arise between the gift giver and accepter. It’s okay to sell the gift a few months down the road, but it’s just weird. The same applies to destroying the gift, especially if it was just given. The gift is yours to do with as you please, but if you stretch that, feelings may be hurt. Also, if you do re-gift the gift, try not to give it back to the person; unless it’s a running joke between the two of you or your group, this is extremely rude thing to even consider.

Keep in mind that you don’t need to tell the original giver; once given the gift’s eventual fate is up to you. Once a gift is given, it is truly yours. Do what you feel you need to do without any guilt.

Art Of Gift Giving

Appearing empty-handed at a party or special occasion can be an impolite and awkward thing to do, so be sure to prepare an appropriate gift. Gift giving can be either a planned or a spontaneous act, and each gift bears a unique significance, a symbolic expression of regard and care for the person receiving the gift, ultimately filling both the giver and the recipient with great joy. A great gift idea definitely makes the occasion and the act of giving more meaningful and exciting.

Gift ideas depend on the occasion, your intentions and nature of your relationship with the recipient, and also on the recipient’s age, lifestyle, interests and cultural background. Whether you are planning a corporate gift or a wedding gift, you should always give some thought to appropriate and meaningful gift ideas, depending on whom you want to give the gift to and for what occasion. Your lifestyle, financial condition and your very own interests and personality can dictate these gift ideas. It will be easier to shop for the gift once you have brainstormed and hit upon some good gift ideas.

Funny gift ideas are always a hit and are bound to bring a smile to the face. Funny gift ideas are especially popular amongst children and young friends who always enjoy a good laugh. A quick online search can come up with several funny gift ideas for children such as funny books (jungle books, comics etc.), funny movies (Ice Age, Finding Nemo, Shrek etc), funny games, funny clothing (such as comical one-liners on shirts for babies, children and teenagers) etc.

In today’s business world, gifts have become fashionable and commonplace. Corporate gifts are a great way to maintain existing client relationships and to welcome new business clients. Corporate gifts are also a great incentive for increasing sales and motivating employees. By giving corporate gifts you can generate publicity for your company plus tremendous good will among clients or employees and their respective families. Corporate gifts are the company’s way of telling its employees that their service and performance are appreciated, and employees in turn feel appreciated by the company and feel that the company cares for their needs.

Gift Giving Etiquette

Is there such a thing as gift giving etiquette? Of course! There are quite a few DOs and DON’Ts of gift giving. Remember, though, that each situation will be a little different from the next, just as individuals differ from each other. We’ve done a little research to provide a basic gift giving guide. These aren’t set in stone, but they should give you a good idea about how to approach gift giving in most situations.

GIFT GIVING ETIQUETTE

Dinner or Party Invitation?

When someone invites you over for a “get together”, you’ll want to bring a small gift to show your appreciation for the invitation. This could include a candle, flowers, or a bottle of wine.

“Please, No Gifts”

If you’ve been invited to a birthday party, graduation party, anniversary celebration, wedding, or any gift giving occasion and the invitation specifically reads: “No Gifts, Please”, then it is appropriate to respect that request. If you feel that you must bring “something”, try a card or some other very small sentiment.

Is money an appropriate gift?

It is appropriate to give money in a few (sparse) situations, like when a teen-ager asks for it. But try to avoid giving money. It’s more thoughtful to give a gift certificate or gift card, but only if you take the time to consider the the appropriate store or restaurant. Pick something that will be enjoyable and/or useful for the gift recipient.

Other Gift Giving Hints

- Don’t give loud toys to children

- Don’t give things that YOU want

- Always try to wrap a gift. If you don’t have the time or talent to make it look nice, spend a dollar on a gift bag and some tissue paper.

- Include a card with your gift, and actually write a personal note in it

- Don’t re-gift a present that you have been given unless a) it is still in it’s original packaging, b) it’s appropriate for the next recipient, and c) the re-gifting will NOT be discovered (by the original giver or the new recipient)

- Always get a gift for a wedding, even if you can’t attend (unless “no gifts” were requested)

- Always bring a gift to a shower, but don’t feel obligated to do so if you aren’t able to attend

Business Gift Giving

Business gifts are appropriate in the following situations:

- Close of a business deal (beware of international etiquette)

- Group gifts for a retirement, serious illness, or other momentous occasion

- Holidays (like a Secret Santa or grab bag)

In a business situation, don’t give gifts that are:

- Personal in nature (perfume, red roses, etc.)

- Only from you (give outside of the office in this situation)

- In violation of company policy (check your company guidelines)

- Not considerate of a person’s culture, diet, environment, etc.

GIFT RECEIVING ETIQUETTE

When you receive a gift, no matter what you think of it, say “Thank you”. Accept any gift politely and remember that it’s a GIFT that was not necessary.

Thank You Notes

When you give a gift “just because,” you are giving a gift to a person simply because you want to and no other reason. There does not have to be any reason to give a gift, and you do not need to worry about getting something in return. Giving a gift “just because” can do many great things for you as well.

If you think that giving a gift just because makes you feel good, imagine what getting a gift just because can make the recipient feel like. When you give someone a great gift to make them smile for no reason, you are doing much more than what it seems at the surface. Picking Gifts

Choosing gifts for coworkers can be challenging. It seems as if it is always someone’s birthday, anniversary or a major holiday. You certainly do not want to spend everything you make on gifts, but the occasions for gift giving can pile up. Many times, you do not know coworkers as well as you do the other gift recipients in your life, but you can find ways to determine what to give and what to spend.

Give a Gift As a Group

One of the most often chosen methods of gift giving at a work or office is a group gift. A designated person gathers the money from everyone in the office and purchases a chosen gift. This can work well for several reasons. No one person carries a large financial burden for the gift. You may be able to get a nicer gift as a group than you would on your own because of a larger dollar amount available. Most important, no favoritism is shown because everyone participates.

Giving Individual Gifts

If your workplace doesn’t do group gifts, you may feel obligated to purchase a gift for your coworkers on special occasions. Many times, you may be genuine friends with your fellow worker and want to give a gift, but other times it may be due to obligation. When this is the case, you will want to keep the gift simple. For birthdays, anniversaries or similar occasions, a greeting card may be all that is needed. A card signed by everyone in the office does the job as well as ten different cards.

Keep in mind, while there are etiquette rules you may want to follow, you are not obligated to buy everyone a gift. You do not have to purchase a gift for the new guy you never met who works two floors below you.

Small Personal Gifts

When giving personal gifts to coworkers, you can choose a gift that is small but says you thought about that person, such as engraved pens, stationery, a book, lotion, something they need for their desk, flavored coffees or unusual tea with a cute mug. It takes little time and effort to personalize a gift by adding a handmade card, thoughtful note or colorful ribbon.

Shopping For Gifts

One sure-fire way to squeeze the most benefits out of your home Internet connection is to save time and money by shopping for gifts online. Buying gifts for friends and loved ones can be hassle free and less expensive when you use all the easy online gift resources available. Particularly, gift shops that carry a wide variety of specialty gifts such as electronics, home decor gifts, bath gifts, lighting products, candles and scents, etc. can help you select fantastic gifts for even the most difficult recipient. Let’s explore five good reasons to shop for gifts from your home.

1. Make the Most of Your Shopping Experience

Don’t fight the crowds. Enjoy a vast gift selection on the Net as you browse various catalogs looking at all the neat products. Think about it… With online shopping, you’re not limited to the 30,000 square feet that a brick and mortar store has. Instead, you have access to a one million square foot warehouse. Sure…you can’t touch or pick up the products. But you sure can read about them and look at hundreds of photos. Besides, it’s a great time saver when you can view 20 products per page versus only several on a shelf at the store. You can shop when you want, whether it’s late at night or very early before you leave for work.

2. Become More Creative with Your Gift-Giving

When shopping for gifts online, you can be very creative with your gift giving. There are numerous gifts online that aren’t available in your local stores. Your friends and loved ones will wonder where you got all your thoughtful gifts. Eye-catching home decor products such as mantel clocks, nesting baskets, curio hutches, and unusual wall shelves will dazzle your loved ones. Surprise the man in your life with outdoor living gifts. Or, buy products based on your loved one’s favorite decor theme, such as angels and cherubs or animals.

3. More Gift Customization Options

Shopping for gifts online allows you to select the color, style and size you want whereas buying in a physical store often limits your options. Gift shops online offer various sizes or colors for many gift products so you can choose the one most suitable for your recipients. Being able to choose size and color is especially important when buying apparel for a friend or family member. Most apparel gift shops or online clothing stores offer the option to select various sizes and colors for each garment.

A Gift For All Occasions

Often we are put in a quandary when we near a special occasion. Sometimes we find ourselves cursing the cause of the occasion than celebrating it. After much consideration and raking of your brain, you would come up with an inevitably mundane gift and curse yourself for not coming up with a better gift. Eventually you will convince yourself that the gift is the best and do away with it. I can assure you one solace that you are never alone and every person suffers from such a situation.

Before getting into ideas that help us gift others, let us know why we gift each other. A gift conveys our untold best wishes, or our appreciation of the reason for the occasion, our encouragement to the person to continue his cause of celebration and many more meanings. When a gift is so important conveys so many untold words, should not it be carefully selected and pampered for the occasion?

All of this can be achieved gifting with a personal touch. Gifts which are meant for the occasion and with a touch of your work will add more depth to the gift and also make the receiver feel important. This can be very useful in case botched up relationships. Personalized gifts show the receiver that you care for them and take time out for them.

There is no end to the number of personalized gifts that can be gifted. For example, the name of the person etched in a soft steel plate and made into a keychain or a necklace will make the perfect gift which will be treasured forever. If the person is a small boy and if he is just learning to ride a bike, then a custom made bicycle cap with a favorite design of the boy will make for a perfect gift.

The main occasion of gifting is marriage. The best gift will be a portrait of the couple framed in a heart shaped frame, or if you are rich enough, a honeymoon package would be appropriate.
